East Fremantle residents Aaron Ludlow and partner Sabrina Whiffen took a pledge to become Australian citizens on Monday 17 March.
Originally from Canada, the pair immigrated to Australia eight years ago, when Mr Ludlow accepted an opportunity to join the International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research at UWA.
Four years later, the couple settled in East Fremantle.
“East Fremantle is a wonderful place to live; there is a deep sense of community here,” Mr Ludlow said.
“It’s a beautiful neighbourhood, with easy access to the Swan River, beaches and many of the cafes and restaurants that we've come to love. We couldn’t imagine living anywhere else.”
Ms Whiffen said becoming an Australian citizen represented more than a legal status.
“We now feel that we truly belong to the community and are excited to have the opportunity to have our voices heard as voters,” she said.
“As Canadians, we are fortunate to enjoy the privilege of dual citizenship, allowing us to embrace Australian culture and values while holding onto the pride that comes with our Canadian roots. We are grateful to have found a new home here in Australia – indeed, it feels like home.”
Of the 12 conferees who attended the Citizenship Ceremony at the Town Hall, three are from New Zealand, two from Britian, and one from Colombia, Germany, UK, Malaysia and Ireland respectively.
New Zealand citizen Nicholas Butterfield said he and his son Felix were deeply honoured to become Australian citizens.
“We are grateful for the values, freedoms and community that this country has offered and made a wonderful home to us for the past twelve years,” he said.
“We look forward to contributing to this country's future with pride and gratitude.”
The Town’s Citizenship Ceremony also coincided with Harmony Week (17 to 23 March), which celebrates the theme ‘everyone belongs' and recognises that Australia welcomes people from all over the world and diversity is valued.
The Town of East Fremantle warmly welcomes its newest Australian citizens.
