We would like to take the opportunity to update our community about East Fremantle Community Park.
Unfortunately, the Town has this week been the subject of several claims in the media. Put simply, these claims are untrue.
The Town won’t agree to changes which will decrease the community benefit or increase the financial risk to our community.
We have been working for many years to achieve the best outcome for the East Fremantle community and for the sporting clubs who will be based at the East Fremantle Community Park.
An underlying principle guiding the Town is that this is a community facility. This principle guided the design, operation and funding model for the facility.
The East Fremantle Football Club has been engaged and consulted about the project for the past six years. This engagement has included information about how the facility is going to operate and how the Club will generate revenue.
Negotiations for the lease and licence agreement commenced in 2023 to formalise these conditions of use.
The negotiations – which in recent weeks have included the State Government – about the Club's sublease and license agreement, continue.
We will keep working diligently with the East Fremantle Football Club and the State Government to resolve any concerns the Club has, and we hope to reach an agreement soon.
The Town is awaiting a response from the Club, following our last Council meeting in August where an extension was provided to the Club to finalise its decision about the sublease. This sublease will grant the Club occupancy of its subleased footprint at the precinct.
Since opening in May, the community and East Fremantle Bowls Club have embraced the new world-class facility and are enjoying all the amenities on offer. East Fremantle Croquet Club has signed its lease and will be relocating to the new facility shortly. The Town is hopeful that the East Fremantle Football Club will also do so soon.
A community space for all
The East Fremantle Community Park was designed and developed as an integrated and financially sustainable community precinct where sports, leisure and recreation thrive together, for the use of all residents and visitors to the Town of East Fremantle.
It has been wonderful to see many community members and visitors using the spaces for:
- Informal mums and bubs mornings in Carnaby's Bar and Restuarant
- A coffee or quick bite, and utilising the Plastic Free July inspired mug library
- A game or two of bowls on the new greens
- Children and teens enjoying the skatepark and half basketball court
- Significant celebrations and awards nights at Carnaby's
- Fitness fanatics sweating it out with a spot of pilates, spin or a gym session
- Colts players from six WAFL Clubs playing a Super Round competition on the oval, organised by the Western Australian Football Commission.
