The Town of East Fremantle has temporarily closed the Silas Street Dog Park (the reserve on the corner of George and Silas Street, East Fremantle) following detection of bonded asbestos.

Mayor Jim O’Neill said the Town was doing everything possible to investigate the extent of the contamination.

“The safety and well-being of our community and staff is our priority,” he said.

“The gates have been locked and members of the public are asked not to enter the park until further notice.

“The advice we have received is that while this find presents a low risk to park users, we are taking precautions and conducting further testing to determine the best remediation options. We thank you for your patience and understanding while the park is temporarily closed.

"As more information becomes available, we will provide updates via the Town’s website.”

Mayor O’Neill said all relevant authorities including WorkSafe and the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation had been contacted.

“We appreciate that some community members may feel concerned while the contamination is investigated and remediation works planned, and the Town’s Environmental Health Officers are available to answer their questions on 9339 9339.”
