In an intimate ceremony on Monday 21 October, an East Fremantle family officially became ‘Aussies’, marking a significant milestone of their 14-year journey in Australia.

UK citizens Joanna Talbot and her partner Peter Pridmore, and their New Zealand Citizen daughter Molly Pridmore, took the pledge along with four other residents.

Joanna and Peter’s Australian story began after graduating from medical school in England and immigrating to New Zealand, including raising their two daughters there.

They moved back and forth to Perth from New Zealand several times before settling in Australia 14 years ago.

Joanna remembers the days of living in Perth before having children, when she and her Peter enjoyed the quintessential WA lifestyle.

“Then one day [while we were in New Zealand] he came over to Perth and came home and said: ‘it’s like how it used to be, but better’, so we decided to move back,” she said.

As East Fremantle residents for 12.5 years, Joanna said they loved living in Perth.

“We embrace the easy outdoor lifestyle being so close to the river and ocean in such a lovely climate whether in the water, on the water or walking Lulu the dog,” she said.

“We have made lovely friends gathered over the almost 30 years since we first came to live in Australia.”

Town of East Fremantle Mayor Jim O’Neill welcomed the Town’s newest citizens.

“I really enjoy citizenship ceremonies. They’re a positive vibrant event for our community,” he said.

“Becoming an Australian Citizen is an important milestone and for some people it’s a journey that’s taken many years.

“As Mayor, I want to extend a heartfelt welcome to our new citizens. Your unique perspectives and talents will enrich our community and help us build a brighter future together.”

Four other individuals from Ireland, Canada and Egypt received their citizenship alongside Joanna, Peter and Molly on Monday.
