Town of East Fremantle and City of Fremantle residents interested in transitioning to an all-electric home had the chance to view electrified homes in East Fremantle on Sunday (20 October).
Hosted by the East Fremantle Climate Action Reference Group (CARG), Electrify 6158 – Plugged In Open Homes gave homeowners who have made the switch to all electric, the opportunity to open their doors to interested residents.
East Fremantle Resident and CARG member Wendy Wisniewski and her husband Jerome, made the switch to an electric home in 2017. They opened their doors to registered visitors from 10am to 1pm last weekend.
“This is the first time CARG has organised an open home tour for anyone interested in approaches to reducing the carbon footprint of their home, and the opportunity to view an all-electric home,” she said.
Wendy said she and her husband had been on a journey to minimise the carbon footprint of their home, since “right sizing” to a smaller 2-bedroom home once they found themselves to be empty nesters.
“In 2017 and 2018 we made significant renovations including upgrading to double glazed windows and doors, installing a home battery, underfloor insulation and recently switching off gas to use a heat pump for hot water,” she said.
“This is powered during peak solar production. We have also replaced the lawn and street verge with a native garden, dramatically reducing water consumption.
“Our house is 100 years old, and we learnt that the age of the property is no barrier to what you can do to live more simply, and sustainably.”
CARG’s Electrify 6158 – Plugged In Open Homes event offered neighbours the chance to connect with homeowners who have made the transition. Participants also heard practical advice during the home tours, which offered a firsthand look at the homes, and how to accelerate their own journey.
