The newly redeveloped East Fremantle Community Park will be officially opened by the Hon. Roger Cook MLA, Premier of Western Australia.

At a cost of almost $35m, the newly redeveloped East Fremantle Community Park will impress visitors when the East Fremantle community celebrates with an official opening day on Saturday 1 February from 4pm to 8pm.

Alongside a smoking ceremony, Welcome to Country and plaque unveiling, residents are invited to enjoy an afternoon of free, family-friendly activities including football, barefoot bowls, live music, face painting, train rides and kids’ activities.

Town of East Fremantle Mayor Jim O’Neill said he was excited to celebrate the official opening and encouraged the whole community to join the festivities.

“We’re proud to showcase this state-of-the-art community facility,” he said.

“Whether you’re looking to kick off your shoes and enjoy a game of barefoot bowls, listen to live music, or bringing the family down for a bite to eat from the restaurant and food trucks, there is something on offer for everyone.”

Mayor O’Neill described the East Fremantle Community Park as a once-in-a-generation development that had been a key capital works project in the Town’s Strategic Community Plan.

“A key underlying principle of the East Fremantle Community Park is that it is a community facility for all – an integrated and financially sustainable precinct where sports, leisure, cultural events and recreation thrive together, for the use of all residents and visitors to the Town,” he added.

“Since the beginning of the project in 2020, we have been committed to creating a facility that fosters community spirit, improves health and wellbeing and provides a space where people can gather, connect and enjoy a better quality of life.

“The facility also reflects the Town’s commitment to sustainability, including use of electricity rather than natural gas, supplemented by solar panels which will be installed very soon. In addition, there has been an emphasis on using native, waterwise plants, with more tree and shrub planting to be completed in the coming months.”

Located at 1 Carnaby Close, the facility boasts something for everyone, including first-class sporting facilities for football, lawn bows and croquet; Carnaby’s Café, Bar and Restaurant; an all-abilities playground; B-Active Health Club; a vibrant function space; an outdoor basketball half court; a skate zone; and an enclosed dog exercise area.

The precinct is also home to the East Fremantle Football Club, East Fremantle Croquet Club, East Fremantle Bowls Club and East Freo Playgroup.

The East Fremantle Community Park was proudly supported and funded by the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries ($25m), Lotterywest ($1.345m) for the playground and skatepark, AFL Facilities Fund ($250,000) and the Town of East Fremantle ($8m).

“We offer our sincere gratitude to everyone who has supported this project, including the State Government for the significant funding it provided the Town, the East Fremantle community and ratepayers and our reference groups and to make this key community asset a reality,” Mayor O’Neill said.
